A. Piper Burgi's Biography

My grandmother used to say, “As long as I have a good book to read, I will be at peace.” I feel the same way. I love books—reading them, writing them, and losing myself in the worlds they create. There is nothing more exhilarating than becoming part of a story and, through it, discovering new places, people, and possibilities.

Looking back, I think I was always meant to be a writer. I come from a long line of storytellers, and ever since I first learned to read, books have been a constant companion. As a child, I spent countless hours immersed in my imagination, creating stories of my own.

I began writing more seriously after the sudden passing of my mother. Only months before, she had asked for my help in publishing her memoirs, though neither of us knew where to begin. In trying to honor that promise, I found myself turning to writing as a way to balance grief with creativity. What started as a quiet outlet soon became something much bigger—a journey born out of love and loss that ultimately shaped the path I walk today.

Before long, I couldn’t wait to return home to my corner of the sofa, laptop in hand, chasing ideas that seemed to appear at the most unexpected moments—while grocery shopping, running errands, or sitting at dinner. Writing became more than a pastime; it became a passion.

After publishing several non-fiction works, including the canine health book LIVING WITH CANINE EPILEPSY, I felt drawn to explore my deep love of history through fiction. This led to my debut novel, IN THE SHADOW OF HER MAJESTY (2016), which later received the Firebird Book Award for mystery in 2021.

I continued my journey into historical fiction with THE COUNTRY GIRL EMPRESS, set in 19th-century Austria—a time and place that has always fascinated me. The novel, which also received the 2021 Firebird Book Award for historical fiction, offers a richly researched and deeply personal perspective on the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known as Sisi—a woman whose strength and complexity continue to inspire me.

The story grew into an expansive series, with award-winning titles such as A LIFE IN THE SHADOW OF THE CROWN, THE PERPETUAL TRAVELER, and EXCERPTS FROM THE IMPERIAL DIARY, followed by AT THE CASTLE OF DREAMS, LOVE, POWER, AND THE EMPEROR WALTZ, THE EMPRESS'S DIADEM, THE IMPERIAL REBEL, and ALL THAT REMAINS....

Most recently, I expanded my storytelling into new directions with RISE OF THE LAST WARRIOR QUEEN—an award-winning novel—followed by WISDOM OF THE LAST WARRIOR QUEEN, and my latest release, THE EXPLORESS AND THE PILLARS OF ETERNITY. These works continue my passion for strong characters, immersive worlds, and stories that resonate across time.

As I share my books with you, I hope they bring you the same joy I find in writing them. Your journey through these stories is what makes mine truly meaningful.
