As her husband, Giovanni Belzoni, gains fame as a successful hunter of lost treasures, Sarah's dissatisfaction with her role as a meek housewife grows. She is torn between her duty as a wife and her desire for freedom. She accompanies her husband all the way to Abu Simbel and, in this misogynistic world, often disguises herself in men's clothing to support her husband's endeavors.

Yet, her path is often crossed by Monsieur Bernardino Drovetti, the former French Consul General, her husband's fierce rival in the hunt for the pharaohs' legacy.
