Beware of Fake Book Clubs and Book Review Scams: A Warning for Authors

If you’re an author, chances are you’ve already received one of these messages—an enthusiastic invitation promising instant reviews, guaranteed exposure, or a “featured spot” in a mysterious book club you’ve never heard of.

I receive these sort of "offers" several times a week, with the promise of swift and fantastic results, meant to catapult my writings to a whole new level.

The truth is, in today’s digital publishing world, authors are constantly looking for ways to promote their books, connect with readers, and gain legitimate reviews. Unfortunately, scammers know this—and they increasingly target writers with fake “book clubs,” “review services,” and “reader communities” that promise exposure but deliver nothing except financial loss.

Here’s what every author should know.

How These Scams Typically Work

Most scams begin with a friendly message—often via email or social media—claiming that a book club, influencer network, or reader group is interested in featuring your book. The message may sound professional and flattering, sometimes even mentioning that your work was “recommended” or “selected.”

Soon after, the catch appears:

  • A “small administrative fee” to place your book in their club

  • A “premium review package”

  • Payment required for guaranteed reader engagement

  • A request to buy large quantities of your own book for “distribution”

Once payment is made, the promised reviews either never appear, are clearly fake, or come from bots and inactive accounts.

Warning Signs to Watch For

Be cautious if you notice any of the following:

  • Guaranteed positive reviews (ethical reviewers never promise this)

  • Pressure to act quickly (“limited slots available”)

  • Vague descriptions of the organization or no verifiable online presence

  • No real reader community—only promotional language

  • Requests for payment before any verifiable service is provided

  • Reviews posted under suspicious or newly created accounts

Legitimate book clubs rarely charge authors to read their books. Genuine reviewers may accept free review copies, but reputable groups do not require upfront promotional fees disguised as “reader placement.”

How to Protect Yourself

  • Research the organization thoroughly. Look for independent mentions, not just their own website.

  • Ask other authors whether they have worked with the group.

  • Check writer forums and professional communities for scam alerts.

  • Never pay for “guaranteed” reviews.

  • Trust your instincts—if something feels overly promotional or rushed, step back.

You can also report suspicious activity to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which tracks fraudulent promotional services and online scams.

Focus on Genuine Reader Connections

While it may feel slower, authentic promotion always outperforms shortcuts. Real book clubs, reader communities, newsletter swaps, library programs, and honest reviewers build long-term readership—the kind that actually sustains a writing career. Scammers rely on urgency and excitement. Successful authors rely on patience, transparency, and real relationships with readers.

Are there legitimate book clubs and review services out there? Absolutely. And yes, some reputable review services do charge a fee. Whether a particular service is worth your hard-earned money is a decision only you can make—ideally after careful research, clear expectations, and an understanding of what they realistically provide.

Remember, writing and publishing are a marathon, not a sprint. Genuine reader relationships, authentic engagement, and meaningful reviews are built and received over time, not purchased overnight. Stay informed, ask questions, share warnings with fellow writers when something seems suspicious, and help keep our publishing community safer, stronger, and more transparent for everyone.
