Today, on the 26th of August—National Dog Day—I’m reminded of the profound joy my furry companions bring to my life. As a devoted dog parent, my canine family holds an irreplaceable place in my heart. Few bonds are as pure and loving as the one between humans and their dogs, and this day honors that special connection.

Take a moment to cherish the unconditional love dogs bring to our lives. Consider how you can make a difference for homeless and abused animals in your community. Dogs enrich our world in countless ways—they protect us, serve alongside emergency responders, and provide invaluable support to those who are blind, deaf, or living with disabilities. National Dog Day is the perfect opportunity to give back to these incredible creatures.

There are many meaningful ways to celebrate. Adopting a dog from a rescue organization, treating your pet to a spa day, or donating supplies to a local animal shelter are just a few ideas. Whether it’s buying your dog a new toy—or ten—every gesture of kindness counts.

A decade ago, my husband and I adopted a foster dog, an American White Shepherd, who arrived at our home pregnant. She gave birth to nine healthy puppies right in our living room. While we did our best to care for them all and found them loving homes, her own adoption fell through, bringing her back to us for another round of fostering. Eventually, she became a permanent member of our family—a happy "foster failure." She spent her years surrounded by love, never wanting for food or warmth, alongside her two furry sisters.

The National Dog Day Foundation advocates for all breeds and encourages responsible pet ownership. They urge everyone to avoid supporting unethical breeders and puppy mills, instead promoting adoption from rescues and reputable breeders.

Today, let’s celebrate our dogs—our loyal, talented, and beloved companions—by spending quality time with them and supporting those in need. Happy National Dog Day!
